Aussie Bird Count

ree

‘I am a magpie, I am a currawong’ by Bridget Farmer was one of the shortlisted books for this year’s CBCA awards in the Eva Pownall Category. This category focuses on books presenting non-fiction texts. This is not a traditional non-fiction text, however it does present illustrations that are scientifically accurate and the rhyming text includes factual information. For example, ‘I am a Currawong, with a yellow eye’.

Birds are important to our ecosystem, from pollinating to keeping insects from plaguing. The annual Aussie Bird Count is taking place in October (20-26.)  “The Aussie Bird Count is an activity for all-ages that involves observing and counting the birds that live near you – whether that’s in your garden, the local park, a beach or even your town centre. By telling us about the birds you’ve seen within a 20 minute period, you will help BirdLife Australia develop an understanding of local birds whilst getting to know the wildlife on your doorstep!” (BirdLife Australia, 2025).

If you are interested in taking part in the Aussie Bird Count, head to the website here and follow the instructions to download the app in preparation for the 20th October.

 Volunteering in the Library

We are seeking dedicated volunteers to help with book covering. Previous experience is welcome but not required, as training will be provided. To volunteer at ACC, you will need a Blue Card and to complete a volunteer orientation session - the school will assist with obtaining the Blue Card. If you are interested, please contact us.

🌸 New in the Library – Teen Breathe 🌸

We are excited to share that our library has just received a brand-new teen magazine especially for girls: Teen Breathe. Our very first issue, Issue 47 (2025), is now available for borrowing, and students who’ve had a look have given very positive feedback!

This issue is packed with inspiring and creative content, including:

  • “The Like Factor” – exploring first impressions and what might lie behind bad first impressions.

  • “Pen to Possibility” – decision-making tips for when you can’t make your mind up.

  • “Through Thick and Thin” – a closer look at sibling rivalry and ways to keep it light.

  • “A Dash of Wonderland” – fun and easy recipes to try at home.

We are trialling Teen Breathe for 6 months, and if there is enough student interest, we will continue the subscription.

Come and check out Issue 47 in the library – we think you’ll love it!

A reminder to all students leaving the school at the end of the year - including Year 12s completing their final exams - that all textbooks, novels, and library books must be returned before your last day at school.

Public Library Holiday September/October Holiday Programme and Da Vinci exhibit

ree

As previously mentioned, our school library will be closed during the school holidays. However, our ePlatform remains available 24/7 for borrowing eBooks and audiobooks. We are fortunate in Australia to have excellent public libraries, and we like to keep families informed about what’s on offer in the Moreton Bay area. Each local council library runs their own holiday programs - be sure to check your area’s website or pick up a printed brochure during your next visit to your local branch. Have a look at the Moreton Bay programme  What's on guide for a snapshot of events in the following areas: Albany Creek, Arana Hills, Bribie Island, Burpengary, Caboolture, Deception Bay, North Lakes, Redcliffe, Strathpine, and Woodford.

I would like to highlight the Da Vinci Machines exhibit - it is a free event and no booking is required. There are also other related activities around the Da Vinci exhibition

On loan from the Museum of Leonardo da Vinci in Florence, Italy, this exhibition showcases 60 of Da Vinci's most iconic inventions, meticulously constructed from his original sketches. The exhibition will spark curiosity and imagination in learners of all ages, providing a rare, hands-on experience of Da Vinci's brilliance.
