Midde School News | Canberra Camp Recap

As a proud member of Generation X, I remember when finding information meant a trip to the library, recording your favourite song required a cassette tape, and if Mum wanted you home, she simply called from the front door! Today's children would probably wonder how we survived without Wi-Fi, social media or Google.

Our middle school students are true digital natives. Technology has always been part of their lives, bringing incredible opportunities for learning, creativity and connection, while also presenting challenges such as managing screen time, navigating social media and building healthy relationships.

As we begin a new term, we recommence the important task of helping our students use technology wisely. At Australian Christian College (ACC), we are committed to partnering with families to develop young people of wisdom, discernment and character who can flourish both online and offline. Together, we can equip our children to use technology in ways that honour God and positively influence the world around them.

Year 7

Year 7 Students from ACC have just shared in an amazing learning journey. They recently returned from an unforgettable, week-long trip to Canberra, packed with incredible learning experiences and thrilling adventures.

The journey offered an invaluable immersion into civics and government. At Parliament House, students stepped into the shoes of our lawmakers, role-playing parliamentary debates to see how decisions are made firsthand. A tour of the Museum of Australian Democracy provided a deeper appreciation for the long journey Australia has taken to become the vibrant democracy it is today. At the Electoral Education Centre, everyone got to participate in a mock vote—leaving many surprisingly enlightened by how complex and unique Australia's voting system really is.

A visit to the Australian War Memorial brought a quiet, profound moment of reflection on the cost of the freedom we enjoy today.

The excursion wasn't strictly about politics, however! Beyond parliament, students enjoyed a memorable snow day, met the wildlife at the National Zoo & Aquarium, and took an exciting evening tour of Questacon (The National Science and Technology Centre). Playtime was elevated with a stop at the iconic Pod Playground at the National Arboretum, while visits to the Australian Institute of Sport and the National Museum of Australia rounded out a truly well-balanced and inspiring journey.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of  $90 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

The students who remained at ACC during the Canberra week also had similar outcomes in their learning whilst completing an alternate schedule that targeted government and civic outcomes. They visited Brisbane and attended Queensland Parliament which is uniquely different to all the other state parliaments. They also toured the Museum and visited the Botanical Gardens.

What an amazing start to term three.

Year 8

This term, our Year 8 Cohort is leading a deeply meaningful initiative in support of Destiny Rescue - an international non-profit organisation dedicated to rescuing children from human trafficking and sexual exploitation, while empowering them to stay free.

As a cohort, we are committed to seeing all children and young people living in the freedom, dignity, and safety that God intends for them. We are fundraising because we firmly believe every child deserves protection, hope, and the opportunity to flourish.

By partnering with Destiny Rescue, our students are taking a clear stand against child exploitation and choosing to support practical efforts that bring rescue, restoration, and long-term care to vulnerable children around the world. This initiative is not only about raising funds, but also about raising awareness and encouraging our young people to live out their faith through active, compassionate service.

Students can support the fundraising efforts through The Makers Market, which will feature baked goods from cooking classes, lolly bags, handmade friendship bracelets, keychains, and more, with items priced between $1 and $5. Additionally, Mr Smith is organising several exciting Sports Tournaments where students can participate as either players or spectators. In Week 9, Senior School tournaments will take place during Wednesday Sports, and Middle School matches will run during Thursday Sport. Students can form teams by paying an entry fee to compete in short matches for a trophy, with featured sports including the World Cup Soccer Tournament,  Rugby Competition, Volleyball for Variety, and Basketball. All donations and entry fees are flexible, allowing students to give however much they feel led to contribute to the cause. Fundraising page.

Year 9

Welcome to Term 3!

We have a busy and important few weeks ahead for our Year 9 students and families.

First, SET Plan meetings began in Week 1, providing a valuable opportunity to map out your child’s senior learning pathway. Additionally, Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held in Week 2 and we strongly encourage all parents to attend and discuss student progress as we dive into the new term.

As part of our ongoing commitment to student wellbeing, the College will soon invite Year 9 families and students to opt in to My Mind Check. This Australian, evidence-informed screening tool helps us identify students who may benefit from early mental health support, allowing us to proactively build resilience and promote positive wellbeing across the cohort.

Keep an eye out for a follow-up communication shortly, which will outline the screening process, how to provide consent, and further details. In the meantime, you can learn more by visiting the official My Mind Check website.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership in supporting our Year 9 students!
